2011 has been a year where Girls
Inc of Pinellas has been recognized by our local community, by our southeastern regional
Girls Inc, and nationally by the National Organization for Women.
In January, the Pinellas
Park/Gateway Chamber of Commerce awarded Girls Inc Charitable Organization of
the Year for our work inspiring the girls of today to become the leaders of
tomorrow.
In June, at their annual
conference, the National Organization for Women awarded Girls Inc the first
ever Girl-Powered Media Award for our production of Being Safe in Our World, a
much-acclaimed video documentary that investigated the impact that a
controversial billboard had on our community.
Most recently, the girls who produced that documentary were
awarded the Advocacy Award in Memphis, Tennessee at the Girls Inc regional conference, selected
from submissions from 11 southeastern states.
In 2012 we will expand our
innovative programs in STEM (science, technology engineering and math), our
transformative
GIRL Start Literacy Program, and our unique PeaceGirls Program,
developing young women skilled in conflict resolution and grounded in
connecting to all people with understanding and empathy.
